The Sickness of Greatness

All we come across are narratives that tell of what heights to reach. Of what a thing should be, how a life should turn out, or how highlighted every moment could become. The internet is an unprecedented force of information that has come to influence every mind on the planet, in both good ways and bad.

It’s provided the opportunity to learn, but the pressure to stand out. “Be yourself!” is the slogan that the masses advocate for as they cancel anyone who speaks differently. Not going along with trends leads you out of the algorithms each platform lives by as they sort out the ideas that fit the mold for garnering the views and attentions of the world.

The God that the internet has become has planted fear into the hearts of humanity. If you don’t get these amounts of views, if you don’t grab this much attention, if you don’t follow the formula of greatness, then you have no value.

This way of thinking has been growing inside our hearts, being consistently fed by the apparent success of those who’ve made it, for it seems like that’s all that lays in front of us.

So when we wake up, when we eat, sleep, drive, read, watch, create, is it epic? Is it what everyone will like? Will the queen that inhabits that world wide web hold me close? Finally, am I chosen?

Under all that, beneath the dirt, the trauma, the screams of the outside world, what is the child inside painting in that canvas of your heart.
